Serving primarily food insecure families in West Hartford, our ministry consists of a monthly food pantry, a bi-weekly community breakfast with a mobile food truck, and a weekend backpack program for public school students. Our focus is trying to access and distribute nutritious food items, including those for families with allergies, plant-based diets and other needs; additionally, we supply as available toiletries, including menstrual hygiene products, seasonal items, school supplies and household items. Partnering with local farmers for fresh produce is a priority in the growing season.
Call to let us know what you have and when you can deliver it, or if you need help getting it to us. We're housed in a church, easily accessible to get to and drop off.
ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
