We are a food pantry that serves 600-750 families a week in Nevada County Ca. Our clients range from homeless to the working poor, seniors and disabled individuals. In 2016 we developed a nutrition policy stating that we were not going to be purchasing anything that has sugar or too much salt and we would no longer hand out sodas due to the sugar content. This has served us well but we are revamping the policy because we have been trying to focus more on fresh produce, milk, eggs, cheese and other protein options. We accommodate various dietary needs as we can such as vegetarian and gluten free. We hand out hygiene items when we have them as well as pet food and baby and adult diapers.

ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
