Grant House Unity Corp. is a registered NYC emergency food provider based in Brooklyn, New York. The main program is the free food distribution program, which began in May 2020, before the official State formalization of the organization in August 2020. Our program provides free fresh healthy fruits, vegetables, meats, dairy, and dry goods to those in need, with a keen interest for those who are low-income, seniors, and children. We provide food to over 10,000 families each month consisting of a wide range of nationalities. We also at times acquire pet food, baby food, and diapers for distribution. Our constituents tell us how grateful they are that we are able to provide their household with healthy fresh food, as supermarket prices and job losses are too much for them to bare the costly burden. We also have received cards and letters from churches stating the tremendous help we have been to their communities.desire is to alleviate food insecurities throughout the boroughs so as to increase the necessary accesses leading to self sufficiency.
Please call before arriving at our location so that we can have volunteers available for receiving food.
ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
