Beth Shalom Love They Neighbor Food Panry

Our synagogue's food pantry is located in the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, NY. It operates on the 3rd Thurs. of each month to from 12-4 p.m., but we're frequently there until 7 p.m. to serve those families coming from work. We provide food to approximately 150 or more families in the community under the auspices of Met Council where we get deliveries of kosher food. However, because our budget is low & the emergency food deliveries have ceased, we get very little fresh produce. This is one of NYC's poorest areas & most residents lack access to fresh produce. Many families suffer health problems due to this lack of obtaining fresh, nutritious food. Our pantry tries to alleviate this, but we are hampered by the lack of funds & the ability to purchase fresh produce for our program. We have been operating the pantry since 1996 & families in the community have come to rely on us to help them through food shortages. As you know, food prices have risen dramatically, thereby causing even more hardship to participating families. Although we know that toiletries are needed as well, we stick to providing food because this is a real priority for our neighbors. Our pantry is open to all who need it without discrimination & we distribute food until we run out, setting aside some of it for our congregation's needy families. We are an aging congregation & we're training some of our youth to continue the program. However, we still leasehave a dedicated group of volunteers who are motivated by the need to serve our community. It would be a Hashem (God)-sent blessing if we could receive fresh food to supplement our meager resources!
