Department of Indian Work
At the Department of Indian Work (DIW), we provide culturally grounded support to American Indian individuals and families across Saint Paul and Ramsey County. Our services include a high-impact food shelf, clothing closet, youth enrichment programming, and family-centered support through our Economic Mobility Hub and diabetes education initiatives. Each year, thousands of families rely on DIW for essential resources and a trusted place of connection. In the last year alone, we distributed over 367,000 pounds of food, reaching more than 18,000 individuals. Our food shelf goes beyond basic groceries. We prioritize culturally meaningful foods such as wild rice, bison, fish, and fresh produce whenever possible, because food is not just nourishment, it is identity, healing, and connection to culture.
In addition to food, we provide diapers, clothing for all ages, and essential hygiene products such as toilet paper, toothpaste, laundry soap, and dish soap, items that are often overlooked but deeply needed by the families we serve. We welcome and deeply appreciate donations of: Fresh produce Grocery staples Culturally specific foods Diapers and baby supplies Hygiene items and household essentials New or gently used clothing Every donation directly supports families in our community with dignity and respect. At DIW, we believe in walking alongside our relatives, not just meeting immediate needs, but building pathways toward stability, wellness, and abundance.
