At Homies Empowerment, we operate the FREEdom Store food and resource distribution each week at our MacArthur Blvd location in East Oakland. We serve hundreds of families, from youth, elders, folks with limited mobility, families with children, and community members across racial and gender identities. Our work is rooted in radical love, self-determination and solidarity.
We deeply appreciate donations of healthy, fresh food — especially fruits, vegetables, grains, and culturally relevant staples.
We also welcome:
Canned goods (soups, beans, tuna, vegetables, sauces)
Proteins such as meats, eggs, and dairy products like milk and cheese
Shelf-stable items (rice, pasta, cereal, peanut butter, oils)
Toiletries, diapers, and hygiene products
Vegetarian, halal, and kosher-friendly items so all of our relatives feel seen and respected when they visit the FREEdom Store

ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
