LUCY Outreach

At LUCY (“Lifting Up Camden’s Youth”) Outreach, we empower youth on their journey to become community leaders by providing programs that offer a safe haven and support their educational, social, emotional, and physical growth. With a nearly 20-year history of service, LUCY Outreach is a trusted resource for youth and families in Camden City and surrounding communities. LUCY serves youth ages 7–19 and their families across Camden City and surrounding areas, including Pennsauken, Gloucester City, Oaklyn, Collingswood, Maple Shade, and Cherry Hill. Approximately 63% of participants identify as Hispanic, 30% as Black American, 6% as multiracial, and 1% as White. Around 74% come from immigrant households, and we proudly serve 75+ LGBTQ+ youth annually through inclusive programming. Bilingual staff (English/Spanish) and translation support in Chinese and Russian ensure equitable access.

The target population to be served in 2025 is approximately 650 unduplicated youth ages 7-19, and their families. LUCY coordinates the implementation of a food pantry in addressing ongoing food insecurity among families, with support through a partnership with the South Jersey Food Bank (SJFB), providing canned goods, fresh produce, meats, milk, eggs and vegetables for youth, families and community members. Additional supports through our Healthy Living Program include: - providing healthy snacks and dinners to our youth during the Afterschool evening programs, Summer Camp, trips, overnights, and college visits. Funding will support local community themed BBQ’s held weekly during the summer months, attended by youth, parent/guardians and families as well as pizza parties & ice cream socials - LUCY youth will also access opportunities to learn about and practice healthy eating habits through cooking and nutrition classes. Through local partnerships with La Ingrata, SJFB and Cathedral Kitchen, youth, parents/guardians and families will participate in bi-monthly training workshops detailing affordable meals with local, fresh ingredients, cooking techniques and tips for a healthier lifestyle. We currently would love a partnership focused on produce & vegetables as this continues to be a challenge/ barrier to access in East Camden, a designated food desert.

ProducePedia

ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!

State Cooperative Extension Web Sites

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
