Avon Cares Food Pantry

We work closely with Ten Thousand Gardens and The Gleaning of Lake County (www.lovingneighbor.org). We are fortunate to have a strong relationship with the six farms at Prairie Crossing, particularly the Learning Farm and Sandhill Organics. You can help by participating in Ten Thousand Gardens and / or The Gleaning of Lake County. We have a cooperative attitude. We are not in competition with other food pantries. Volunteers are always needed and very, very welcome. Just two hours a week of reliable service is invaluable. Call Candy at 847-546-1446. Donations of food and money are always needed. We always need paper products and personal hygiene items. Your contributions are tax deductable! If you've read this far you understand the problem. Come be part of the solution!

ProducePedia

ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!

State Cooperative Extension Web Sites

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
