BJ House of Community is a 5013 community based organization that holds a food pantry every Wednesday from 9:30am to 4pm. In addition to hosting a walk up food pantry station, we also distribute those very same foods to the senior and homebound population by bringing it right to their doors. We service 140 - 160 families per week. Our population is of a "mixed masala: in that we service ALL (Mexican, LatinaX, African American, Caribbean and African) . We prefer fresh produce as well as halal and vegetarian donations if conducive. If toiletries are possible, we will kindly accept that as well.
As we hold both the walk up food pantry station & mobile food component, registration for the mobile food program is required. In order to determine eligibility, one must call
347-289-7991 or email [email protected] for further discussion
ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
