We are the oldest Food Pantry and Largest in Walker County, TEXAS. Founded in June of 1983, Good Shepherd Mission is the only Homeless Shelter, MEALSITE, Food Pantry/Bank, Clothing and Furniture Bank, and Counseling Center in Walker County... even regionally. We have adapted and thrived in economic downturns, hurricanes, droughts, civic unrest, Pandemics, and Blizzards. We have almost a 30 year relationship with Houston Food Bank that includes receiving awards and grants of various sizes. We have unique relationships with our community in residential areas, businesses, civic organizations, public schools, SHSU, and area churches.
Thousands have been sheltered, fed, clothed and counseled and EMPOWERED to live a better life for good. We have a unique relationship with TDCJ, the single largest organization in Texas. We have given out so much food with HFB and Feeding America and others like Ample Harvest's help AND along with all the donors and local Retail Food Stores that all of Walker County and surrounding communities' residents should have gained 50lbs each in 2020 to 2021. Lets keep feeding our needy together, and let us find better ways to EMPOWER them to feed themselves!
PRIMARY hours are 9am to 11:45am Monday-Friday, however we have staff here and Shelter Clients and some volunteers every day of the year.
ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
