Hendricks County Senior Services

Food access services remain critical and are increasingly in greater demand. Older adults in Hendricks County are going hungry. In addition to the danger of hunger, senior wellness is impacted by the lack of nutritious foods. Seniors who have limited access to nutritious foods are at greater risk of falls and greater risk for poor mental health/depression. Hunger also impacts physical health by contributing to high blood pressure, high cholesterol, unhealthy weight, osteoporosis, heart disease, and stroke. The Food Pantry provides healthy food to older adults.

The food pantry operates as a drive-through and delivery model. Food pantry donors are encouraged to provide “senior-friendly” options. Agency purchases from Gleaners are nutritious choices, including fresh produce, dairy, lean proteins, and low-sodium items. The food pantry service benefits food-insecure older adults who are at risk for malnutrition. The food pantry meets a critical need for agency clients that are (formally and informally) raising their grand and great-grandchildren. The agency expects to provide 16,000 healthy meals and distribute more than 70,000 pounds of fresh and non-perishable foods next year. In addition to its Nutrition services, the agency provides transportation services, in-home care, and operates a vibrant senior center focused on health and wellness programming. We DO love healthy resh food for our seniors!

State Cooperative Extension Web Sites

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
