We are located in the northern part of the Navajo Nation straddling the Arizona and Utah stateline. The majority of the population is Native American - Navajo. We serve approximately 125 families every month through the local Food Bank, with food provided by the Utah Food Bank. We serve all families who come to the food bank - single, young to the elderly families not matter their affiliation (veterans, LGBTQ, etc.) The food provided is mainly pantry items canned and dried) and not enough fresh food items as vegetables, eggs, milk, meats, etc. In this community, we live in a food desert as the nearest grocery store is approximately 65 miles away in all directions. We have a gas station in the community but most of what they carry is considered junk food. We would also appreciate toiletries, laundry cleaning supplies, personal hygenie supplies, etc.)

ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
