North West Montana Veterans Stand Down and Food Pantry is a Veterans Service Center. One of only 20 in the united states. Since 2003 when we became a GPD Service Center we have helped 50,000+ homeless, low-income and “at-risk” Veterans and their families. Our provided services are designed to meet emergency unmet needs of food insecurity, clothing, household furnishings, showers, laundry, personal hygiene, peer counseling, referrals to VA, CoC providers and community resources. Our services are a first-stop sanctuary for homeless Veterans who are hungry, cold, lost or living on the streets and are uncertain where to seek assistance. After basic needs are met, we assess what additional resources will help to stabilize their life and facilitate those connections and referrals.
Outreaching and coordinating with Veterans seeking additional assistance is a continuous endeavor of our organization. In 2025, NWMTVSD served 4,654 individual qualified Veterans who received food assistance through monthly food boxes. Homeless Veterans enrolled in the Grant and Per Diem (GPD) program represented approximately 30 percent of our total client population. Of the 310 Veteran households served that year, 98 were experiencing homelessness at the time of intake. NWMTVSD also logged more than 1,100 hours of GPD-funded services specifically dedicated to homeless Veterans, demonstrating both the intensity of need and the level of engagement required to stabilize this population. NWMTVSD’s service center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m, with an intake processor available on a walk-in basis from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. All Veterans have 24/7 phone access with our number posted on the front door. Veterans may access services the same day they present to our facility. Unsheltered Veterans identified through outreach 0r coordinated entry are encouraged to come directly to the service center, where intake and eligibility determination occur as quickly as possible. In most cases, Veterans begin receiving services immediately upon verification of basic eligibility. No gender-specific services are offered at the Service Center. All services—including intake, case management, food assistance, hygiene access, referrals, and supportive services—are available to all Veterans based on eligibility and need, without regard to sex or gender. This approach ensures equitable access while promoting dignity and respect for every individual served. Each month, hundreds of Veterans and Veteran families rely on our program, and over the course of a year we support thousands of community members. For many, our services help bridge the gap between paychecks, stretch limited resources, and ensure access to nourishing food and basic necessities. We are especially grateful for: We provide Fresh, healthy food (produce, dairy, bread, protein), Canned and shelf-stable products as well as personal care items such as shampoo, soap, toothpaste, toilet paper, and diapers. Nutritious kid-friendly foods and we re use grocery bags, egg cartons and anything more we can use.
