Pantry279

Serving Southern Indiana Families with Dignity and Compassion since 2015, Pantry 279 has been a vital lifeline for families in Southern Indiana, providing much-needed food and hygiene items. What began as a local Girl Scout Project, has grown into a regional force, reaching across 36 counties and touching the lives of tens of thousands of individuals. Sadly, the need for Pantry 279's services has increased dramatically in recent years, and we are now serving upwards of 9,000 people each month, primarily within Monroe, Owen, Lawrence, and Greene counties. We are more than just a food pantry; we strive to be a source of support and empowerment for our community. Beyond providing essential food, hygiene, and baby items, Pantry 279 offers a safe, non-judgmental space where individuals can access resources and support. We are dedicated to educating our clients on healthy food choices, reducing food waste, and connecting them with partner agencies that offer a wide range of additional assistance.

Currently, we proudly provide food to six other agencies, further expanding our reach and impact. Our commitment extends to those who are unable to reach us. Our delivery service to homebound clients has recently expanded to include Owen, Greene, and Lawrence counties, as well as the entirety of Monroe. Our dedicated volunteers send out nearly 200+ deliveries each week, ensuring that even the most vulnerable members of our community have access to the nourishment they need. During the summer months, we address the critical need for food security among children with our Summer Kids Food Program. From May to August, we operate "pop-up pantries" in six different locations each week, supplementing the meals that children typically receive during the school year. We consistently serve over 3,600 children through this program, helping to prevent hunger and ensure they have the energy to thrive. Furthermore, Pantry 279 has established itself as the organizer of the two largest holiday assistance programs in the area: Thanksgiving Kindness Program: We provide entire Thanksgiving meals to families in need, offering options of Turkey, Ham, Chicken, Lasagna, and Vegan alternatives, along with all the traditional side dishes. Through this program, we have helped over 2,700 families ( 20,000+ individuals ) enjoy a festive and fulfilling Thanksgiving dinner. Elf Dispatch Christmas Gifting Program: This beloved program connects children in need with generous members of our community who provide personalized gifts. Last year, we successfully matched over 1500 children with sponsors. In addition, we host an "Extra Toy Day" for those who did not receive a match or assistance from other programs, ensuring that every child experiences the magic of Christmas. We are deeply grateful for the generosity of our amazing community and volunteers, without whom our work would not be possible. We serve clients with all types of dietary needs, from Vegan, Gluten Free etc. We love to provide as much fresh produce, dairy, meat, and shelf stable food. Toiletries, feminine products, and items for babies (diapers/wipes, baby food & formula ) are always in high demand and very much appreciated!!

State Cooperative Extension Web Sites

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
