Piscataquis Regional Food Center

PRFC, home of the Dover Foxcroft Area Food Center, serves as the last mile distributor for Good Shepherd Food Bank, delivering food to 21 food agency partners in the Maine Highlands region. Our storefront is open to community members by appointment every Tuesday, Thursday, and the second Wednesday of each month, so we share a lot of produce each week. In addition to operating a choice "pantry", PRFC makes home deliveries within our service area to residents who are unable to reach a food agency. Our ample cold storage enables us to receive fresh produce and our extensive distribution network ensures that produce will reach low-income people and families who are experiencing food insecurity. In 2023 the Food Center served more than 9,100 people and completed more than 1,000 home deliveries.

ProducePedia

ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!

State Cooperative Extension Web Sites

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
