The Salida Food Bank is a non-profit organization under the umbrella of Love Salida. We serve clients who live in Salida. We are open the first three Tuesdays of every month from 11-12:30. The last Tuesday of the month is spent picking up food from Second Harvest and delivering it to our food bank. Clients can come weekly and can shop for items of their choosing. We always have meat choices for them as well. We service mostly a Hispanic population, which is typical of Salida. These clients would LOVE fresh produce, but we are a small food bank, serving about 150-200 families per month and we need to be able to get a smaller amount of produce than Second Harvest offers on day before we are open to pass out these products to the clients. We have limited refrigeration space. However, our clients absolutely love fresh produce and we would love to be able to offer it to them. Our families range in age from young families to clients in their 70's and 80's. Another product that we seldom get is toiletries. One hundred percent of what we get goes to these families for free. We are all volunteers and our pantry space (building, electricity, water) is covered by the Neighborhood Church. We rely solely on financial donations from people in Salida.

We can arrange to accept food on Mondays if that works better for the gardeners. We just have to know so that we are sure to have someone at the facility on that day.
We can arrange to pick up the food if you like. Otherwise, the first Monday of the month for delivery would be perfect. We can make sure that someone is at the food bank to accept and store the products.
ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
