University Health Truman Medical Center was happy to open the University Health One World Pantry on August 8, 2022. We are a hospital based food pantry. We believe that food is an essential right of all people and that hunger should be addressed with dignity, respect, and a strong sense of cultural sensitivity. We started Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) Screening in two clinics. If patients screened positive for food insecurity they were referred to the pantry. We have since expanded to other clinics across the hospital. Since starting in August we distributed healthy, shelf stable food and produce to over 700 households. We primarily work with Harvesters and they have been an excellent partner for us but we are interested in expanding the produce that we can offer our patients and community members. We only stock and distribute items that are culturally appropriate and nutrient dense for our patients and community members.

ProducePedia
ProducePedia is a free resource that covers the types of fresh produce that can be delivered to food pantries. Each entry includes information on color, taste, and possible uses. People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
