Urban Ministries of Wake County is a non-profit organization that alleviates the effects of poverty in Wake County by meeting people’s basic needs for food, shelter and healthcare, providing services that promote self-sufficiency and building awareness of the issues of poverty within the larger community.
Urban Ministries operates the second largest food pantry in Wake County providing crisis food assistance to 27,000 individuals annually (8,000 families including 11,000 children). Since 2013 the crisis program has focused on nutrition by providing fresh produce, healthy proteins and a better selection of canned and boxed goods to all program participants. Additionally, Cooking Matters classes have been offered to nutrition program participants and to clinic clients with illnesses related to food consumption.
As we aim to further increase access to fresh and healthy food, we need the help of our community and community growers to provide that fresh produce.

People unfamiliar with the vegetable or fruit will learn how to use it, and those who are familiar with it still might learn a fun fact or two!
The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
