The Varick Soup Kitchen, located at Varick Memorial AME Zion Church, is a dedicated community outreach ministry committed to serving hot meals and hope to those in need throughout New Haven. Operating every Monday, our team of volunteers welcomes individuals and families from all walks of life, including seniors, veterans, low-income households, LGBTQ+ individuals, and unhoused neighbors.
Each week, we serve 70 to 120 guests, and that number continues to grow. Many of our guests depend on us as their primary source of nourishment, community, and comfort. We believe that food is a human right and that compassion is a form of justice.

The Cooperative Extension sites have a wealth of information for any backyard gardener. Once you go to the site (each one if very different from the others) look for a link for “homes and gardens”, “landscape”, “consumer horticulture”, etc. to find information on improving your backyard garden. Neighboring state sites may offer information your own state’s site lacks.
